In 1985, BC Rail donated a caboose to the District of Mackenzie. A unique gift in itself, the caboose would be put out at the junction of Hwy 97 and Hwy 39 with the goal of enticing travellers to leave the main highway and head into Mackenzie.

The Mackenzie "Caboose Visitor Centre" is now closed for the fall and winter seasons and will reopen in May 2023. Phone 250-750-4497. As well as providing all travellers an overview of regional and provincial visitor information, it is the ideal location for drawing tourists off the beaten path, into Mackenzie. The community is nestled in the surrounding wilderness, providing unlimited opportunities for outdoor recreation and local hospitality.

“The main objective of the visitor centre is to encourage people to stop in and visit the beautiful quiet pristine community that resides here,” says Visitor Centre Manager Janey Morgan. “If not for the visitor centre, people may keep on driving and miss the beautiful lakes and abundance of outdoor activities that Mackenzie has available.”
